Flag Day at Albert J Hamilton Post 7
The month of June is a busy time for the Albert J Hamilton American Legion Albert J Hamilton Post 7 family. The warming weather brings spring projects, the Whatcom County Memorial Day Parade, Memorial Day activities, and incoming Executive Board Member initiations. Pre-planning and preparation for Albert J Hamilton Post 7 summer events also compete for members’ attention. However, in the middle of this hectic month a very special event is held every year.
For some Bellingham American Legion members June fourteenth, otherwise known as Flag Day, holds a special significance. On this day Legion officers and select members of the Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony. Those in attendance stand silently as solemn words are spoken, honors rendered, and old glory is gently lowered into the flames of retirement. Participants and attendees, one and all, feel the weight of this ceremony.
Upon completion, the Post Commander then declares the Flag Retirement Ceremony has ended. Smiles return to the faces of those who have witnessed this hallowed event. A sense of comradeship is felt around the Post as members enjoy complimentary hotdogs and other refreshments.
For those who missed this year’s event, please circle June fourteenth on your 2024 calendar. The Albert J Hamilton Post 7 Flag Retirement Ceremony is most definitely an event worth experiencing. See you at the Post!
